Tracing the origins of the contacts takes us back to the Renaissance. Leonardo Da Vinci is widely given credit for the idea of the contact lens through analysis of his notes in the book ‘Codex of the eye’. But it would take till the late 18th century for F.E. Muller, a German glassblower to develop an eye covering that could be worn.
Adolf Eugen Fick took the idea further and created the first wearable contact lens. It was however uncomfortable to wear for large periods of time and was unsuccessful but the concept of contact lenses had huge potential as the 21st century would come to know.
By the year 1949, the first "corneal" contact lenses were developed. These lenses could be worn for 16 hours at a stretch. But the early versions had drawbacks such as not letting air pass through to the cornea. After many iterations Czech chemist Otto Wichterle developed the first soft contact lens, and in 1971 it was approved for public usage.
